Impressions After a Month with an E-Bike

Monica Kidd shares her initial impressions and thoughts after her first month with a Shimano STEPS e-bike.

Pivot Shuttle e-bike

For someone that loves to be outdoors riding her bike, winter is a difficult time. Living in the southeast, I’m generally able to ride year round. Winters are pretty mild, but the days get shorter. I work in an office setting and often only see sunlight coming through the window. The shorter days mean less time on the trails and every ride can be a race against sundown. If I’m lucky, I can get a quick lap at a local trail before it’s too dark, but that’s not a guarantee.

All that changed when I got my Shimano STEPS equipped Pivot Shuttle. I admit I was a little intimidated before my first ride. I thought it would be heavy and difficult to handle, but that’s not the case at all. Sure it’s a bit heavier than what I’m used to, but I’m able to maneuver this bike around a trail just like my other bike, if not better, and the power delivery on the STEPS E8000 system, even in Eco Mode, offers enough assistance to get me through difficult sections and steep hills that normally give me trouble. My local trail is full of tight turns and short, steep climbs. I normally have trouble with those areas on my mountain bike, but the STEPS E8000 motor helps me carve through those technical spots with ease, allowing me to focus more on my steering while maintaining momentum through each turn. Then, there are those unexpected stops on the side of a hill. Not quite at the top, but on the incline making it difficult to get back on, balance your weight, and kick off. Instead of the usual toe tapping for momentum, like a child on a scooter, I can get both feet on the pedals and smoothly resume my ride without issue. The walk assist feature also helps if I have to push the bike up steeper hills. I’m only 5’ 2”, so pushing anything uphill can be a challenge in itself.

Overall, my Shimano STEPS e-bike allows me to do everything I could on my other bike, just faster. Now I have the ability to squeeze in a ride on days when it normally wouldn’t be possible, and finish with daylight to spare. Having the capability to get in one or two laps safely, and stress free is a game changer during these shorter, colder days when getting outside remains a number one priority.
