The Future of Tandems is Here

Hawthorne Tandems, located in Spring, Texas, has been building custom tandem bicycles for the past 20 years. Customized in every way, Designer Ric Becker works with the client to decide measurements, carbon tubing with or without titanium couplers, and frame color.

Originally designed for mountain bike use, it was only a matter of time before the narrow Q-Factor and higher torque of the Shimano STEPS E8000 Drive Unit was used in other applications. STEPS E8000 is already prevalent on sporty city bikes from BMC and cargo bikes from Wallerang and Yuba, to name a couple.

You can now add tandems to that list. Hawthorne Tandems, located in Spring Texas, has been building custom tandem bicycles for the past 20 years. Customized in every way, Designer Ric Becker works with the client to decide measurements, carbon tubing with or without titanium couplers, and frame color.

About 4 years ago, Ric started experimenting with pedal assist using Shimano STEPS E6000. While the STEPS E6000 initially fit the bill, the E8000 system was clearly going to be the “latest, greatest, and thinnest” Drive Unit for their E-Assist Tandems. Ric decided to give STEPS E8000 a try. Although it created some initial challenges with the requirement for a second chaining, the narrower Q-Factor and higher torque of E8000 made for a superior finished product. Another benefit of E8000 was the E8010 battery that can be neatly integrated, secured, and tucked away beneath the bottom tube on their carbon frames. The compact drive unit and streamlined battery together are more discreet, especially when custom painted to match the frame.

Another benefit of the STEPS E8000 system is that it allows for further customization through E-Tube. On a tandem, the lead rider operates all the controls, and STEPS offers various switch options to support different configurations and preferences, but riders could also use Shimano’s Dura-Ace Di2 and Ultegra Di2 drop bar shifters to access the three assist levels of Eco, Trail, and Boost. All these preferences are easily set through E-Tube.
