- Explore New Grounds

From the Mountain to the Mediterranean - Nice, France

We set ten riders the task of designing an e-MTB route to challenge and inspire riders to explore new ground. For this one we headed to the south of France, the home of former pro Enduro rider Mary Moncorgé, to explore her local trails.

Head in-land from the French Riviera and up into the hills and you will discover a completely different world of old mountain top villages and dusty ancient tracks, completely in contrast with the fast-living glamour of the Côte d’Azur.

Mary Moncorgé is surrounded by a wealth of singletrack but planning this route presented a challenge, “we have amazing trails, but some are very difficult and not all are accessible for all riders”. However with some careful thought she nailed a route that anyone exploring the Alpes-Maritimes for the first time will enjoy, “this one hits the spot for everybody. It is a good sample of the area without being too difficult.”

Nice is a hotspot for pro riders of all disciplines; its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea gives it a temperate climate so you can comfortably ride all year round and its surrounding hillsides are covered with quiet roads and trails, perfect for training. Videographer Toby Martin from HUMAN tells his story, “we were just leaving the airport and driving along the coast ride when we saw a rider in full Hans-Grohe pro kit on the cycle lane, we sort of laughed and went ‘oh look its Peter Sagan’ but then when we got close it really was!”

From the top a roller coaster of a trail, nicknamed ‘Disney Land’ puts a grin on every rider’s face.

When you aren’t riding your bike Nice is a cosmopolitan city, rich in history and culture and well, just plain rich! From the super yachts cruising the coast line to the super cars lapping the Promenade des Anglais the whole place oozes wealth. Or as Martin put it, “any direction I stuck my camera in there was something that cost a lot.”

Mountain retreat

Despite the buzz of Nice and Monaco being only a short ride away, the mountain village that Mary Moncorgé starts her route in is quiet. It has a great bakery for a pre-ride snack and a bar in the shadow of the church where workers meet for a drink at the end of the day, and there wasn’t a super car in sight. Instead there was an engine of a different sort to play with.

As you make your way round the route, often on tracks used to move animals across the hillside for centuries, you get a fresh sense of perspective. The busy coast line is never far away, from the viewpoint Moncorgé led us to you can see all the way to the Mediterranean, to Corsica and beyond, but why the hustle and bustle? Take a moment to breathe in the pine-scented mountain air and feel the strength in your body as you tackle the rocky single track.

From the top of the mountain a roller coaster of a trail, nicknamed ‘Disney Land’ puts a grin on every rider’s face, a great way to finish the ride. Tired, smiling and covered with dust from the trail you may find yourself wondering who needs a super car anyway when you can ride an e-MTB?
