Riding through the Eternal Wall - Lake Hallstatt, Austria

One of ten Shimano riders asked to share an e-MTB route former professional downhill rider, Markus Pekoll, shows us around the mountainous Salzkammergut region of Austria.

As a former downhill rider Markus Pekoll is more familiar with taking the gondola than pedalling uphill, but for this route he enjoys the assistance of his e-MTB to allow him to tackle the alpine trails that lead to the top of the mountain.

This routes offers you a little bit of everything, there is some small physical effort in the climbing, spectacular mountain views and an interesting descent back to the lake, plus an unusual opportunity to cycle through a tunnel. A solid wall of limestone rock, the Ewige-Wand or Eternal Wall, acted as a block to the rest of the mountain that none but the most skilled climbers could get past, until a route was dug in the 1950s by a hotel to allow their guests to easily walk up the mountain to see the view. A tunnel is carved straight through the rock of the mountain side with an exposed narrow balcony trail accessing it. Definitely a spot for your Instagram shots.

After crossing through the Ewige-Wand the trail continues upwards and if your ride to the top has depleted your energy levels then Markus Pekoll has a suggestion for you, “There is a great mountain hut at the Hütteneckalm at 1,240 meters where I like to eat sat in the sun and enjoy the view. You might want to reward your climbing efforts with Kaiserschmarrn. This dish is really unique to Austria, you don’t eat it as your main dish, it is more of a snack. It’s a mix of egg, milk, water and salt. You bake it first then crush it, before adding some jam and sugar on top. It is typical Austrian mountain food, full of carbohydrate and energy, it tastes really good but it is not the healthiest!”
